Spill the Beans
I’m not the world’s greatest giver of gifts, but every once in a while I get it right.
Last year for Mother’s Day and our anniversary, I bought Deb two tickets for us to see Donny Osmond in Tulsa. Not just tickets, but the VIP Package that included a small group question and answer session with Donny before the show, a photo op with Donny himself, and third row center seats. Debbie grew up LOVING Donny Osmond. I’ve always known that I was her second choice in the husband department. The tickets were a good investment. Half way through the show Donny came down into the audience, took Debbie by the hand, looked her into her eyes, and sang to her. Then he kissed her on the cheek. I did good. Real good.
I bought the tickets in March, but I had to keep the secret until Mother’s Day. I’m pretty good at being tight-lipped, but this was a tough one. The combustible combination of anticipating Debbie’s delight when I broke the news and well-deserved pride in myself for scoring the tickets threatened to blow my lips open and let the secret out. Finally it did; a couple of weeks before Mother’s Day the pressure got to be too much and I spilled the beans.
Some secrets are too good to keep to ourselves.
Spring Creek is one of those good secrets. All of us have heard it; “Spring Creek is Oklahoma City’s best kept secret.”
It’s time to spill the beans. Will you help us get the word out?
We all drive past churches and notice the parking lots. We wonder, “Why do so many people go there?” Maybe it’s the band or the preacher. Maybe it’s the white-hot youth group or the lively children’s ministry. Maybe they serve up a mean latte in the lobby and let people drink it in the sanctuary. But here’s the truth; almost all the people got there because somebody invited them.
Most people drive past Spring Creek and see Baptist in our name and make assumptions about who we are. Can’t blame them. We’re a Baptist church in Oklahoma City after all. But we know those assumptions are wrong. Spring Creekers are a different kind of Baptist and Spring Creek is a different kind of Baptist Church. But our neighbors won’t know we’re different until someone tells them, shows them, invites them, brings them.
I am convinced that there are people all around us who haven’t given up on Jesus, but are precious close to giving up on church. Yet, I dare to believe that you know people who are looking for a place like Spring Creek even if they don’t know it. And God knows Spring Creek isn’t a perfect church, but I believe we are genuinely seeking to walk together in the way of Jesus, and that matters.
So here’s your assignment. Make a list of 3-5 friends who you’d like to go to church with. Pray about it, pray for them, pray for yourself. Then decide when you’ll invite them to church. Then do it. You might invite them to a worship service or a special event. Maybe offer to pick them up, then take them out for a bite to eat or dessert after, and pay if you can afford it. Show them where the restrooms are. Be sure to sit with them and introduce them to the people around you, but give them your best attention. I’d do a happy dance if you introduced them to me.
